I wasnât familiar with Royâs life story before, but so many of my Goodreads friends kept telling me I should check out this memoir â and honestly, from the moment I saw that eye-catching cover and title, I was hooked. As soon as I started listening, I couldnât stop. ð§
Learning about Royâs childhood and all the challenges she faced was deeply touching. Her story reminded me a lot of Angelaâs Ashes â that same mix of hardship, resilience, and quiet determination to carve out a life beyond what society expects. Roy overcame so much, mostly with her quick wit and fierce willpower. Her experience in architecture school â the grit, the talent, the relentless drive to keep going â was especially inspiring.
Iâll admit, the story slowed down a bit once she was successful and established, but her voice stayed engaging the whole time. Her honest reflections on her abusive mother, told with humor and humility, were truly remarkable â painful and real without ever sounding like self-pity.
I finished this audiobook feeling even more curious about India itself. Roy describes it so vividly â beautiful, heartbreaking, complicated, unjust, but full of hope. Arundhati Roy narrates her own very personal story of her sometimes difficult sometimes loving relationship with her notorious mother over her long and eventful life. It also serves as an interesting history lesson as she covers her own life as an activist during troubled times in India. She has a wonderful turn of phrase, sometimes very amusing and sometimes very sad but always there is a deep love for her mother, family and India. I couldnât stop listening!
