I’ve been a voracious reader my whole life, but these days I struggle to find books that really hold my attention or truly engage me. I’ve loved Stephen King since high school back in 1978, so I’ve been spoiled. I honestly thought that maybe my reading pleasure was winding down as he got older and slowed down a bit. But he still entertains me, makes me laugh, cringe, and think—just not as often. He deserves a break too, I get it.
About ten years ago, I started reading Joe Hill and have really enjoyed his work. NOS4A2 was fantastic, and I loved The Fireman, Horns, Heart Shaped Box, and others. But none of them quite hit the same spot for me yet. That was until I read King Sorrow. Wow. I know Joe Hill probably hates being compared to his legendary dad, but hear me out, Joe. With King Sorrow, you’ve really stepped up to that pedestal in my eyes. It felt almost like I was reading King himself. (Well, technically, I was reading King—just a different one.) A very talented guy has really hit his stride with this book and I’m so thrilled… for me! lol
Nothing has pulled me away from binge-watching shows like The Pitt or Shrinking lately—until I started King Sorrow. I didn’t want to watch TV anymore; I wanted to read. I wanted to read King Sorrow. It’s been a long time since a book made me feel like that. Joe Hill has become one of the very few authors I buy on release day. And honestly, I’m so happy for him, but even more, I’m happy for myself because I’ve been pretty sad about losing something I loved—reading that makes me feel something.
I really recommend this audiobook. It’s an epic story of friendship, love, betrayal, greed, and power—set in a world filled with dragons, trolls, fairy tales, and a modern digital age. Troll farms? Yep, just what you think—and more. I loved those little Easter eggs and nods to his dad too. The character development is fantastic; you’ll care about these people, and some will make your blood boil.
